Ensuring that Your Christmas Sparkles with the Best Lights

By: Xmas Data

If you use the right lighting displays you can easily make your holidays sparkle and express your creativity as well as the Christmas Spirit. However too many people don’t take the needed precautions in order to make sure that their lighted decorations remain safe for the homes they live in as well as their families. A whole number of home electrical fires are caused annually by improper lighting as well as their extension cord use. You should prevent your holidays from turning into a disaster by taking note of these very simple tips:

You should always make sure that you check for sockets which are cracked or loose as well as connections. Any broken bulbs should be replaced as well as wires which are exposed, frayed or scorched. This should be done before the lights are plugged in. New ones should also be examined to make sure that safety defaults are in place.

As soon as your lights have been plugged in, they should be laid down on a non-flammable surface and they should be observed for at least a quarter of an hour. By doing this you can easily observe for different things such as shorts, sparking, melting as well as various other signs that indicate overheating.

All the lights which you use should be UL listed. What this means is that they have been inspected and approved for all the U.S safety recommendations.

Trees should be watered on a daily basis as dry needles can easily spark when they are heated by lights and this can cause a fire.

Tree lights should be kept from direct contact with the needles and the branches of the trees

Artificial trees should be fire retardant

You should never make use of indoor lights, decorations or extension cords outdoors. Even when they are protected by the weather you should ensure they are rated for outside use. Lights which are made for indoor use should have green UL markings and tags, those lights which are safe for outdoor use should have red UL markings as well as tags. Lights that can be used for both indoor and external use will also have the red UL markings as well as tags.

Outdoor lighting and decorations should always be plugged into a ground fault circuit interpreter outlet.

You should make sure that you stick with the manufacturers instructions for all manner of use. You should ensure that you look through these instructions to see if there are any weather or temperature restrictions.

You should not leave your indoor/ outdoor lighting or decorations on when you are sleeping or when you aren’t at home. A timer should also be used so these lights or decorations aren’t accidentally left on accidentally in such situations.

Three strings of lights is the maximum number of lights that can be left on a single extension cord. Multiple extension cords shouldn’t be used together along a single circuit.

Metal staples shouldn’t be used to hang light strings and nails should be avoided for this purpose as well. They can easily damage the protective insulation around the wires and cause an electrical short as well. You should always use plastic fasteners instead.
